Big snow forecast for Metro Detroit this week

Timeline of heavy snowfall forecasts

The Local 4Casters are tracking a potentially massive (relatively speaking) snowfall for later this week – here’s what you’ll want to know:

The National Weather Service released a Winter storm watch for Wednesday and Thursday for all of Metro Detroit. This will probably be upgraded to a Winter storm warning as a major winter storm targets the Detroit metro in the middle of the week. We will likely see rain showers first and these will start sometime after sunset on Tuesday evening. The first wave of this storm will move from the south and could be regular heavy rain Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning.

The the transition to snow will take place early Wednesday and we should be in snow most of Wednesday bringing about 6 inches of new snow to the area. Times will move from the mid-30s Wednesday morning to the upper 20s Wednesday afternoon and evening. This will keep the storm from bringing snow instead of rain and it will continue to build as we head into Thursday.

Thursday will be snowy and dangerous with 4 to 8 additional inches possible Thursday making storm totals for Metro Detroit Wednesday and Thursday 8 to 14 inches of fresh snow. It would be our biggest winter storm and biggest mess of the year with snow showers finally fading Thursday night or early Friday morning.
